I Love My Yorkie | Yorkie Social Network For Yorkie Lovers

For those of you that are interested in your yorkies background, follow me through the history and characteristics of the Yorkshire Terrier. After all, we all love our yorkies and cherish their very nature.

Have you ever wondered, "Why is my yorkie so curious about everything?"? It is because they are scavengers to the core. They love to find things, smell things, and eat things (for this reason, it is important to keep an eye on your yorkie!). It seems as if everytime I turn around, Lula Belle has something in her mouth that she shouldn't! But, that is ok because it is in her nature.

As most of us know, yorkies were originally bred to catch rats and mice in mines in Great Britain. But, did you know that our little yorkie friends were also used as hunting dogs years and years ago? This is true! They were great at chasing foxes, rabbits and other game out of their hiding places. I only hope that these hunting yorkies were not sometimes accidentally in the line of fire.

Don't let a yorkies size fool you, as most yorkie owners know, yorkies are excellent guard dogs! By guard dog, I do not mean they are going to scare away an intruder with intimidation, but they will let you know that someone is there. I guess they are more of a watch dog rather than a guard dog; they are extremely alert and can hear everything!

Yorkies are very intelligent and therefore, are not very hard to train at all. It took me only a couple of repetitions to teach Lula Belle how to sit and shake. Give them a treat and they will do anything you want them to!

Yorkies also have a great sense of knowing the difference between adults and children. They are great dogs for familys as they are just as playful as a six year old. If I am too tired or not in the mood to play, Lula Belle automatically knows that my six year old niece is someone that will play with her. She will actually pick her ball up in her mouth and drop it at my niece's feet, knowing that she will throw it until her arm falls off.

It really is amazing that such a small dog can be so intelligent and alert. Before we got Lula Belle, I did not want a yorkie because I automatically assumed that they were dumb because "they have small brains." (thats what I always said). Boy, was I wrong! They are brilliant. It is no wonder why they are consistently ranked in the top ten most popular breeds by the American Kennel Club.
